Hello, I am Ricardo Y, an international teacher–as you are, or will be. Congratulations on taking the first step, you are about to embark on the best journey of your life (I have had it twice). You are about to experience many changes. I would like to tell you a little bit about one that I struggled with.
The first time I came to the United States I was ready and prepared to give my best at work. To unpack and teach, to educate and lift spirits. That was not the first thing I faced. Waiting for having my security number in my hands, waiting for my appointment to get a driving license, waiting for processes was the most difficult part of my experience. I had a nightmare once. I was swimming in water, but I did not know where the surface was. Lost and nowhere to swim towards. The waiting was stressing me out and it made me feel everything was out of my hands. Waiting might seem stressful because you did your work and now what else? Waiting might create anxious feelings and disrupt your health. My alternative was thinking positive and choosing things I love to do. The USA offers a variety of activities I enjoy to do, so I chose to go to a recreational park and do exercise. I chose to go to the gym and get stronger, I chose to look at my surroundings and feel grateful. I went to the public library, I drank coffee at Starbucks, and I ate at McDonalds. Simple things will make you happy and release stress. There are amazing people in the USA. I have friends who invited me to play golf, to go surfing, to be on a soccer team, to try food from their culture. I had the best experience when a friend of mine (we co-teach at that time) invited me to have my first Thanksgiving at her parents house.

“The waiting times might be stressful. Just remember, the day will come. Let’s enjoy!”

From Ricardo Y.
