As a J-1 Program Assistant at Teachers Council, I had the opportunity to embark on a journey to Texas that would deepen my appreciation for educators and cultural exchange. I accompanied our J-1 Program Director, Chrissie F. We flew into Dallas, eager to connect with teachers who were participating in our international exchange program. Our first stop was downtown Dallas, where we gathered with some of our local Dallas teachers for a delightful dinner.
As we settled into our meal, our waitress approached with a question. When she asked if we were celebrating anything special, we told her our purpose for the trip: visiting our international exchange teachers who were making a difference in American schools. To our surprise, she returned with a plate adorned with sparklers and a sweet dessert! It was a heartwarming gesture that encapsulated the spirit of our visit—celebrating the dedication and passion of teachers.
To add a touch of Maryland pride to our gathering, where Teachers Council is located, we brought small containers of Old Bay, our unofficial state seasoning. As a proud Marylander, I can attest that Old Bay is the perfect complement to our official state food, the Maryland blue crab. But it doesn’t stop there—I love it sprinkled on fries, too! Sharing this beloved seasoning felt like sharing a piece of home.
Our gathering included educators from a diverse array of countries: Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Each teacher brought unique perspectives and experiences, enriching the tapestry of our exchange program. It was really a special experience to witness how these dedicated individuals were integrating into American classrooms, sharing their cultures, and learning from one another.
One teacher, in particular, caught my attention—a charismatic elementary educator whose joy radiated throughout the room. His students were eager participants, and their engagement spoke volumes about his ability to create a welcoming learning environment. It was honestly a joy to witness such enthusiasm for learning.
Before we departed, we made sure to bring more Old Bay to the teachers and school staff who couldn’t join us for dinner. It was our small way of expressing gratitude for their hard work and dedication.
We wrapped up our trip with a final pit stop at a well-known local barbeque joint. I can honestly say it was the best brisket sandwich I’ve ever had! We stocked up on barbecue sauce as gifts for our Teachers Council team, and departed for home with full bellies and full hearts.
A huge thank you to East Texas for welcoming Teachers Council and our international teachers into your schools and communities. We were incredibly impressed by the commitment of all the educators we met, and we look forward to returning to continue our shared journey of learning and cultural exchange. Until next time, Texas!
