Teaching in the United States has been such a rewarding journey for Yesica, filled with personal growth, new experiences, and meaningful connections. Originally from Mexico, her decision to pursue an international teaching opportunity came from a mix of curiosity and courage. She went on a whim and tried interviewing, motivated by the idea of one day teaching in a different country. The opportunity in Idaho turned out to be right on target!

Since arriving, Yesica has embraced the flavors of her new home. Some of her favorite foods include hamburgers, mac and cheese, fries, and salads—comfort classics that have become staples. But it’s not just the food that has added excitement to her life. In her free time, she has discovered a new love for hiking, relishing the beauty of nature in a new environment.

Her travels have also left a lasting impression. Washington D.C. captivated her with its rich history and iconic landmarks. She had the opportunity to attend a workshop with colleagues, explore museums, and immerse herself in the culture of the nation’s capital. Seeing the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the monuments were unforgettable. Yellowstone National Park, on the other hand, offered a completely different experience—one filled with awe-inspiring landscapes and close encounters with wildlife.
In her classroom, Yesica weaves elements of her own culture into lessons, sharing stories about special events in her hometown and connecting them to her students’ experiences. Her efforts to foster cross-cultural understanding have been impactful, to say the least. Yesica encourages her students to participate in multicultural clubs on campus and helps them develop meaningful connections with one another. This approach not only enriches their learning but also builds a stronger and more inclusive classroom environment.

One of Yesica’s proudest moments as a teacher came during a project night at her school. After six to seven weeks of hard work, her students presented their learning to their parents. It was such a memorable moment because of all the amazing and positive feedback she received from both parents and administration. Moments like these remind Yesica about why she loves teaching and the impact she can make on her students’ lives.

Yesica’s class library is another source of pride and joy as a teacher in the U.S.. Coming from Mexico, where class libraries are minimal, finally being able to have one of her own fills her heart. She worked hard to get her class library to where it is today – full of books! Her students understand its significance, and it has become a shared treasure within her classroom. Yeisca is so proud to have such an open-minded group of students and parents that fully support her culture and activities that she shares with them.

Beyond the classroom, Yesica has made it a point to give back to her community. She has volunteered at homeless shelters and participated in local church events, bringing her warmth and dedication to every opportunity.

Yesica’s journey is a testament to the power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, embracing new challenges, and building bridges across cultures. Her dedication to her students, both here and back home, ensures that the lessons she’s learned and lessons she’s taught will continue to inspire others.
