Maggi’s journey from the Philippines to the classrooms of East Texas has been filled with discoveries, connections, and cultural exchange. With a background rich in teaching experience across the Philippines and Vietnam, Maggi arrived in the United States eager to immerse herself in a new educational environment and continue developing her craft as a middle school educator. Little did she know just how much her time here would transform her approach to teaching and enrich not only her life, but the lives of those around her.

The sense of community is an essential part of Maggi’s life, both in and out of the classroom. She plays an active role in her local Filipino-American community in East Texas, which puts on many events in the area. Maggi was recently invited to sing the Philippine National Anthem at their Summer Sports Fest! Alongside her involvement in community events, she regularly volunteers at the local food bank, reflecting her dedication to giving back.

Maggi’s teaching style has evolved in many ways since her arrival in the U.S. She finds the emphasis on student-centered learning, critical thinking, and data-driven instruction particularly inspiring. Her teaching style grew to allow for greater differentiation and flexibility to meet diverse student needs, while also emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and collaboration in the classroom. The blend of cultural diversity, emphasis on innovation, and data-driven instruction shaped her approach to engage students actively and meaningfully.

One of Maggi’s most memorable moments was organizing the school’s first eSports competition, a project that brought together students, local businesses, and even a partnership with a local state university! Students were thrilled to participate, showing their unique skills and celebrating a new passion within the school community. This event was a highlight of Maggi’s time teaching in the U.S., bringing the students together and showcasing the positive impact of her work.

Bringing culture into the classroom is also a priority for Maggi. She started a new campus tradition by setting up virtual colloquies – a space for cultural exchange between her school in Texas and in the Philippines. She also introduced her students to traditional Filipino games like “Patintero,” creating opportunities for students to engage in meaningful cross-cultural conversation. These activities have become beloved traditions for her students each year, adding a unique, global dimension to their education and helping them appreciate cultural diversity.

Her teaching prowess and dedication to her craft has not gone unnoticed! Maggi was crowned Campus Teacher of the Year for 2024 at her school, a testament to all of her years of openness to growth. It didn’t stop there – the local Rotary Club acknowledged Maggi as an honoree at a similar event. It became a full-circle experience for Maggi, as she was also a student leader honoree at her hometown Rotary Club nearly 20 years ago. Most recently, Maggi was identified by her school district as an Outstanding Educator and nominated for the 2025 Excellence in Education Awards.

Outside the classroom, Maggi has taken advantage of the U.S. travel opportunities. Her favorite place is New York City – she has visited twice and truly feels that she was born there in another life! Gatlinburg, Tennessee was another favorite of hers, where she explored the natural beauty and American homestyle culture of Gatlinburg. One of her favorite culinary discoveries in the U.S. has been Texas-style barbecue ribs, and she’s lucky to live in one of best places for barbecue in the country! Another unique hobby she’s picked up is 35mm film photography, capturing her new surroundings with an artist’s eye.
Her time in the U.S. has undoubtedly broadened her outlook, giving her insights that she’s excited to share with her students and colleagues back home. With plans to introduce data-driven instruction, innovative technology integration, and an emphasis on student well-being, Maggi envisions a future where her experiences in the U.S. enrich classrooms in the Philippines.
Maggi’s journey as an international teacher is a testament to the profound impact of cross-cultural exchange, as each experience she’s embraced in the U.S. will resonate in all of the classrooms she touches for years to come.
